Taoism

There is a monastery in Greece perched high on a cliff, several hundred feet in the air. The only way to reach the monastery is to be suspended in a basket which is pulled to the top by several monks who pull and tug with all their strength. Obviously the ride up the steep cliff in that basket is terrifying. One tourist got exceedingly nervous about half-way up as he noticed that the rope by which he was suspended was old and frayed. With a trembling voice he asked the monk who was riding with him in the basket how often they changed the rope. The monk thought for a moment and then answered serenely:
"Whenever it breaks."

And there I am kneeling in the grass in the half dark pouring enamel paint onto paper and blowing on it till it blossoms out and mixes up, and's going to be a great masterpiece until suddenly a poor little bug lands on it and gets stuck - So I spend the last thirty minutes of twilight trying to extricate the little bug from my sticky masterpiece without hurting it or pulling off a leg, but no go - So I lie there looking at the struggling little bug in the paint and realize I should never have painted at all for the sake of that little bug's life, whatever it is, or will be - And such a strange dragon-like little bug with noble forehead and features - I almost cry - The next day the painting is dry and the little bug is there, dead - In a few months his dust just vanishes away from the painting altogether...

We were close to a path and every time someone came past he had stopped working and asked in a loud voice How are you doing this morning? Almost everyone had answered with Fine, and how are you? except Edgar who had mumbled something, taken off his fur cap, pulled it inside out and put it on again.

One can behave in a normal fashion, and one can behave in a crazy fashion. The Zen masters and the Zen disciples whom we meet in literature always choose the crazy way. They ask each other mad questions, they beat each other up, and they laugh a lot. But only the book people behave that way. Zen men behave like most sane men... But... How are you this morning? is a standard question, a form without much meaning, or depth. But the question can be quite deep.

There was a little boy who saw thousands upon thousands of starfish stranded on a beach, as far as the eye could see. He began to pick them up one by one and throw them back into the water. A man walked by, and said: "There are so many starfish - you can't possibly save them all. What does it matter if you throw a few back?" The little boy replied: "It matters to those I threw back."
