• Ironically (because the goals of the two languages are so different), some say that Esperanto grammar inspired Orwell's design of Newspeak. Doubleplusungood, for example, would be a perfectly reasonable Esperanto word (using Esperanto roots, of course). During his Down and Out in Paris and London (my favorite Orwell book) years, Orwell for a time had to reside with a cousin, Ellen Kate Limouzin, who was living with Eugene Lanti, now known for the Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda (World Non-nationalist Association). The couple spoke only Esperanto to each other, which bugged Orwell since he didn't know the language very well.

• On M2M I had mentioned CLARK's use of look out in IL, where I would use look up, ekz. looking out a word in the dictionary. Thought it a Britishism or archaism, but nobody recognized it. Shortly after, Tomaso ALEXANDER mentioned on AUXLANG that his son says I thought it out for I made it up, borrowing an idiom from Esperanto. Sure enough, not just elpensi, but also elserĉi. So now I'm wondering if Esperanto had influenced CLARK's speech, and if so, which language had influenced Esperanto.

• While Post-Processing the English-Esperanto Dictionary (EED1906) at Distributed Proofreaders, I came across a "typo" in the book that I wasn't sure about, and decided wasn't a typo after all. Nowadays "tosto" is a toast to somebody's health and "toasto" is made from bread. When I bumped into "toasto" with the health meaning in this dictionary, I kinda thought it was a typo. But I also know that "toasto" for bread is a relatively new usage, so I suspected that the dictionary might be right (for 1906). I've found a book review on the Web that refers to some oldfashioned words in the book Sen Titolo, including "toasti (= tosti, p. 290)", and in Helen Fryer's The Esperanto Teacher "toast-" is used for both meanings, "toasti" for health and "toasto" for bread! Also, the health "toast" is used consistently in the 1906 dictionary, in two places, for both "Health, toast a" and "Toast (a health)". So it appears that in Esperanto's early days "toasto" was used for the health meaning, and the bread meaning was covered by "rostita pano" or "panrostaĵo" or some such. Later, "toasto" acquired the bread meaning and "tosti" was coined for the health meaning. That's my theory, anyway! — YES!!! Verified by PIV2, secondary definition of toasto: "2 (ark.) = tosto: oni eldiris ~ojn^Z." Also note, PV (1930, unua eldono) doesn't have toast, does have "Tosto. Dumfestena propono pri trinko por la honoro aŭ la sukceso de iu aŭ io. -i (ntr.) Eldiri —on.".
